DIEGO LUZ BIO:
Diego Luz (b. Mexico City, 1970) is a master of contemporary Mexican figurative expressionism and a highly distinguished portraitist of national figures.
Formed at the prestigious National School of Painting, Sculpture, and Printmaking “La Esmeralda” and the historic Academy of San Carlos (UNAM), Luz further refined his exceptional technique under the mentorship of hyperrealist icons Santiago Carbonell and Guillermo Muñoz Vera.
This rigorous academic foundation earned him historic institutional commissions, including the official portraits of former Mexican President Vicente Fox, various state governors, and Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa, as well as the monumental restoration of 90 historical diplomatic portraits for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Parallel to his institutional career, Luz has developed a powerful signature studio work that redefines the human gaze. Moving from absolute realism to a visceral, high-energy figurative expressionism, his canvases are celebrated for their thick, impasto palette-knife strokes and explosive, neon chromatic temperatures. His internationally sought-after works have been showcased at premier contemporary art fairs like Zona MACO and the Affordable Art Fair and in prominent exhibitions across Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Represented by elite spaces such as Galería Golden Section in Puerto Vallarta, his paintings belong to major private, public, and university collections worldwide.
